• Summary:Populations of the marsh fritillary are known to fluctuate. During phases of abundance the butterfly is widespread and occupies a large range of habitats. Whether its tolerances are more precise when it is scarce is unknown but this knowledge is fundamental to the conservation of the species. A survey was undertaken of the distribution and extent of the habitat of marsh fritillary across the whole of Islay in spring 2007. This report describes a repeat survey in spring 2012 when marsh fritillary was scarce. It examines differences in distribution, its population structure and the features of areas in which it persisted.
