- Title: NatureScot Commissioned Report 627: A modelling assessment of control strategies to prevent/reduce Squirrelpox spread
- Summary:A spatially explicit mathematical model was developed to represent the population and disease dynamics of squirrelpox virus in red and grey squirrel populations. The model was used to assess the likely impact of current grey squirrel control strategies and to explore if there are alternative strategies that could reduce its further spread. The model was then extended to assess the effectiveness of grey squirrel control should squirrelpox spread into Central/Northern Scotland and to predict the impact of the virus at the interface between red and grey squirrel populations in Highland Scotland. Lastly the model was used to assess the success of protecting local red squirrel populations via control strategies, taking Fleet Basin Stronghold forest as an example.
