• Title: NatureScot Commissioned Report 567: Development of a surveillance scheme for priority lichens in Scotland
• Summary:Understanding trends in species populations, range and habitat quality is a principle requirement for conservation evaluations. This report considers the approaches required to develop a cost-effective suite of surveillance methods for lichens on the Scottish Biodiversity List. This is done by prioritising species, identifying and mapping their suitable habitat, and by testing a range of survey methods for the oceanic woodland lichen Pseudocyphellaria norvegica (Norwegian Specklebelly). For this test species, an estimate is made of the sample size required to detect a particular percentage change in a lichen population over a particular time. The report concludes by recommending the next steps to develop and implement a surveillance programme for priority SBL lichens across Scotland.
